If your home does indeed have a termite problem, we will outline the extent of the termite damage that has occurred and a treatment plan to exterminate the termites from your home.
Termites are insects that feed on wood, often times becoming inhabitants of homes. There are two types of termites commonly encountered: the worker and the swarmer. The workers will feed on wood, and then return to the colony to feed the other workers, reproductives and soldiers. The swarmers are a dispersal flight of winged termites used to start new colonies. The average colony consists of 50,000 - 250,000 termites, and is located in the ground. Termites can enter structures through cracks as small as 1/16 inch. Once they enter your home it will take a professional to remove them.
Worker termites are creamy colored, 3-4 mm long and typically seen when wood is infested or broken open. They have straight, beaded antennae, a broad waistline, and two pairs of wings which are the same size.
Termite Swarmers are the reproductive cast of the termite colony. They are approximately 3-4 mm long and dark brown or black in color. They may or may not have wings depending on how old they are since the swarmers lose their wings shortly after emergence. There are 3 different types of castes of termites: The reproductives are about 3/8 inch long. Their wings are brownish-grey with a few hairs. Their body is dark brown or black. The soldiers are wingless with white bodies, a yellowish-brown head and large dark mandibles (jaws). The workers look similar to the soldiers, but without mandibles.
The best treatments today use an odorless, non-repellant, low toxicity liquid that termites can’t detect. It’s applied to the soil, next to your exterior foundation, all the way around your house. With this type of treatment, the termites don’t have to find and then eat and the bait, they just have to pass through it in the soil and they will die a few days later. Since the termite workers can’t detect this new liquid treatment, they keep tunneling through it. Once they get it on their bodies they end up carrying the treatment back to the main colony. It then spreads from termite to termite by contact and quickly eliminates the entire termite colony. If inside treatment is needed, it is applied to the inside area where termite activity is noted, or another highly susceptible areas like a finished basement wall next to an area found to have termite activity.
